General Questions

Q1 - What do I need to start with?

A1 - You'll need a terminal, either colour or monochrome, a battery pack and a docking station.

You'll also need to decide upon the operating system.  Windows Mobile 2003 runs on the CE.net 4.2 framework, however it features a pretty user interface and more bundled programs (Pocket Office etc.)  If you are intending to run software designed for 'pocket pc' (eg. IPAQ, O2 XDA) then you should choose a Windows Mobile 2003 variant, if you are intending to develop your own applications using Visual Studio.net or 2005 then the CE.net variants are usually favoured.

There are very few differences between the colour and mono versions however:-

Colour has more program memory (128MB Vs 64MB)

Colour has built in Bluetooth, Monochrome does not

Q2 - Is a battery included with the Workabout PRO.

A2 - No there is not a battery included when you purchase the Workabout PRO.  Two are available and we would always recommend the large capacity battery if one of the barcode scanners is fitted.

Note that although the Workabout Pro will run on 'AA' batteries, these should be considered for emergency use only.

Comms Questions

Q1 - Can I connect the Workabout PRO to my PC?

A1 - Yes you can, you will need a docking station and a USB or RS232 lead. You will also need Microsoft Active Sync to copy files too and from your Workabout PRO.

Q2 - How can I transfer data to my PC?

A2 - You will need Microsoft Active Sync. This is a free Microsoft data transfer software package that will work with all  CE.NET devices, including the Workabout PRO.

Q3 - Does the Workabout PRO have a 9-pin RS232 or IRdA?

A3 - Yes a range of end-cap modules are available which add RS232, IRdA and TTL ports to the Workabout pro.

Q4 - Does the Workabout PRO have a USB port?

A4 - Yes there is a USB connector on the Workabout PRO.

Q5 - How can additional feature be connected?

A5 - The Workabout Pro is modular, a variety of internal connectors allow Barcode modules, serial ports, radio cards and much more to be connected directly into the body of the Workabout Pro maintaining its IP and Drop ratings/

Power related Questions

Q1 - What batteries does it use?

A1 - The Workabout PRO uses Lithium Ion battery packs, In an emergency you can use standard 'AA' batteries.

Q2 - Does this mean I can use regular 'AA' batteries?

A2 - Yes, but they are designed to provide emergency power only and shouldn't be viewed as an alternative to a battery pack.

Q3 - Does the docking station charge a spare battery?

A3 - The docking station can charge a spare battery as well as charge the battery inside in the Workabout PRO.

Software Questions

Q1 - Will the Workabout PRO run Pocket PC software.

A1 - If you are using the Windows Mobile 2003 version of the device then software designed for Pocket PC can be used.  For Windows CE.net versions you should check with your software supplier.  On the whole Pocket PC software will not 'just run' on CE.net 4.2

Q2 - Can I run Java applications on the Workabout PRO?

A2 - Yes a Java virtual machine is available for the Workabout Pro

Q3 - Can I run Flash Movies on the Workabout PRO?

A3 - There is not a standard Flash Player for CE .NET however you can obtain the Macromedia Flash SDK and compile your own player to run on the Workabout PRO.
